Qatar Aluminium (Qatalum)
The Qatalum plant in Mesaieed opened officially in April 2010.
Qatalum Aluminium (Qatalum) is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Hydro Aluminium AS. The smelter, which began production in late 2009, has an initial capacity of 585,000 t/a of primary aluminum. The project, in the Mesaieed Industrial City in Qatar, is the largest initial phase greenfield aluminum smelter ever built.
It consists of a smelter, casthouse and carbon plant, as well as a dedicated gas-fired power plant with a capacity of approximately 1,350 MW.
The Qatalum project is based on Hydro's advanced proprietary electrolytic reduction cell technology. The generation of technology installed in Qatalum was first applied in the Sunndal plant in Norway. This technology makes Qatalum one of the most environmentally friendly and compact electrolytic reduction processes in the world.
Production from the plant is planned to increase to 609,000 t/a from 2013.
